Draper, Michael "Born in Northern Ireland, I was sponsored to New Zealand in 1958 to run a textile company. Do-it-yourself New Zealand had a real appeal for me.

The textile business returned me to Europe often. I was to find furniture increasingly more interesting than textiles and after 20 years I needed to change direction, so decided to design and make furniture in New Zealand. Rejecting the notion that timber-based furniture was the only option, I decided that the furniture would be steel-framed, starting with trolleys then on to shelving, desking and tables. I manufactured on Ponsonby Road opening my showroom in 1981. It never entered my head to make other than high quality. The company began to build a valuable client base on that philosophy. I developed early rules of integration between my designs which were to become evident in later years." www.michaeldraper.co.nz
